There is no question that God makes the rules of the universe and lives by His own rules. One of those is when we ask Him to forgive us, He will. And when He forgives, He forgets. Isn't that incredible. He says, "Their sins and iniquities I will remember no more." In Hope Alive we practice by this principle. I tell my patients that all their horrible memories will stay with them until they forgive those who have hurt them, [Sinned against them]. Once they forgive, they begin forgetting and it snowballs. Eventually all the painful memories go and with those memories, the pain goes from their mind. This song is to remind us that we need God's forgiveness, all day, every day, particularily because we ignore Him every day.
The first and most important commandment is to love our God. Our best friend is standing beside us and we ignore Him. It must be awfully insulting. However, even though this song says, "Please forgive me God, twice, [songs do that sort of thing], I don't believe that we need to ask God twice. Usually He is more ready to forgive than we are to ask. Nor do we need to beg for mercy. We can rejoice that He has given us mercy, rather than say, "Have mercy on us O God." What we say to the world at large is that God has had mercy on us!
